Fresh starts can be intimidating.

Just 6 short weeks ago I started my first position in a new industry. I was lucky enough to be offered a position with a company that invests in their people and were happy to take me on knowing I was newly certified as a Salesforce Admin.

I can honestly say the effort put into learning new skills and a completely new industry has been worth it. Since I began my journey in the Salesforce world, I’ve heard over and over about the Ohana and how everyone I met would be willing to help. This has been the absolute truth in my experience. My work mates are kind, and giving of the time they have in their capacity to guide me on this giant learning curve. I was warned that joining a consulting partner was the fast track to exposure of all kinds of things, and that was no exaggeration.

I’m glad it was a conscious choice, and I’m embracing all of the opportunities that are sent my way. Workshops, discovery and scoping, Jira, Lucidchart, FRS, data migration, Skyvia, Communities and Lightning Scheduler the list goes on. Through trial and error I’ve become competent at screen sharing in Google Meets, which was a challenge initially in choosing the right option.

I’m grateful we have the opportunity to work a hybrid model, learning by osmosis in an office environment has been key for me, especially the first few weeks. My boss is generous with his time in creating learning opportunities and will often jump up to the white board and explain at a detailed level. Getting over the initial uncomfortableness of the webcam has also helped in my development, I guess I’m pretty expressive as one of the team leads takes great joy in watching my reactions when he’s checking my capacity for tasks he needs completed. I must work on masking my fear ..or not!

If you are like I was 12 months ago, not exactly sure where this next stage in life was going to lead, my advice is to go for it. Explore new options, seek the advice of successful people, and make the most of resources available. Make new connections and reach out for advice and inspiration. Join a group or meet-up and really dig in and become involved. Most everyone has felt like you are feeling right now, and they will be happy to give you a boost in the right direction.
